Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. – Psalm 119:18
Setting the Stage for Courageous Prayer
Today we begin our series: “Praying Like Daniel: A Study in Courage, Wisdom, and Revelation.” Let us open our heart to allow God to lreveal “wondrous things” to us!
Who is Daniel and Why Should We Care?
Imagine being a teenager, selected to serve in the palace of an empire that conquered your homeland. That’s Daniel’s story. It’s not just about him, but about a whole community struggling with their identity and faithfulness to God while in exile in Babylon.
Daniel and his friends—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—stood out for their intelligence, potential, and physical beauty. They found themselves far from home, in a land that posed a risk to their cultural and spiritual identity. Here begins the life of Daniel, a life rife with courage, wisdom, and divine revelation.
Courage to Stand Out
Living in a society hostile to his beliefs, Daniel shows extraordinary courage. He defies the norms of the Babylonian court, risking his life to maintain his integrity and faith. He doesn’t partake in the king’s food and continues praying even when it becomes illegal.
Wisdom Beyond Measure
Daniel wasn’t just courageous; he was also exceptionally wise—a wisdom granted by God. He interprets the king’s dreams, advises rulers, and gains favor in foreign courts. His wisdom not only protects him but sets him apart as a man of profound insight.
Revelations that Expand Horizons
The Book of Daniel offers some of the Bible’s most fascinating prophetic visions. These revelations give us a glimpse into God’s grand design for all of humankind, making Daniel an enduring figure to study and emulate.
Living with Integrity in a Shifting World
This book teaches us that living with integrity is possible, even in a society that may not share our values. Daniel and his friends don’t compromise; they stand steadfast in their faith, facing even fiery furnaces and lions’ dens. In our ever-changing world, Daniel’s example serves as a timely reminder that you can be in the world but not of it.
Even in exile, even when threatened by flames or fangs, God’s grace surrounds Daniel. This story assures us that even in uncertainty and danger, God’s providence remains.
