In our fast-paced, technology-driven lives, seeking moments of real peace and divine connection often feels elusive. Yet, the deep longing expressed by the Psalmist in “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God” (Psalm 42:1) mirrors our own search for spiritual solace. Our pursuit is to desire God above all and to develop the life-changing habit of turning to Him in every moment.
The Digital Age’s Temptation: Our modern life, cluttered with endless notifications and digital distractions, traps us in a cycle of wasted time and lost focus. Ironically, the convenience of the world at our fingertips can make us feel more isolated from life’s essence and, crucially, from our spiritual foundation.
A Lenten Surrender: Lent presents a perfect opportunity to evaluate our priorities and our attachment to digital devices. It invites us to give up not only time-consuming habits but also our instinctive turn to earthly comforts instead of divine fellowship. Limiting our phone use can create room for deeper engagement with God.
The Prayer of Refocusing: Praying “Lord, be my reflex” asks for God’s guidance to be our natural response in joy, sorrow, or solitude. This prayer acknowledges our dependence on God’s presence as our main source of comfort and direction, above all temporary pleasures.
Embracing God’s Presence: By making God our focal point, we recognize Him as the ultimate source of fulfillment. Our deepest desires and ambitions truly find their answer in the love and peace that only God offers. This shift challenges us to rely solely on God, turning to Him first in all life’s facets.
Cultivating Constant Communion: Seeking God before anything else goes beyond minimizing screen time; it’s about increasing our spiritual consciousness and maintaining continuous conversation with the divine. It’s a dedication to grounding all our actions and desires in God.
As we face the challenges of modern existence, let’s recall the Psalmist’s simple yet profound yearning for God. In doing so, we align our hearts with the eternal, finding in God’s presence the strength, comfort, and happiness that support us in every adversity and victory. “You alone are my heart’s desire, and I long to worship thee” transforms into our life’s anthem, signifying our wholehearted love and commitment to God. May this Lent be a period of rediscovery, prioritizing God’s presence above everything, letting His love fully renew and change us.

Thanks for the word. Lord help me read more and stay away from digital 🙏 during this time. May I seek more of You God!
Amen
My! My! My! Psalm 42 verses 1 and 2 took me back…after going astray, I returned to my God and Savior. My Redeemer delivered me from a messy situation in which I found myself. Anybody know what I’m talking about!!!
This was very good and encouraging to get our priority in order
